Healthcare workers nationally are facing an increase in workplace violence, often instigated by patients and visitors. A study published earlier this year reported that almost 20% of healthcare workers have faced physical abuse in the workplace. A nationwide study conducted by National Nurses United found that a majority of nurses have experienced workplace violence. The three most common types of behaviors reported by nurses included verbal threats, physical threats, and being pinched or scratched.
Given the increase in violent behavior in healthcare settings, providers are increasingly looking to end their treatment relationships with patients who engage in disruptive and inappropriate behavior.
